Team Tryouts

Participation in Wedgewood’s Junior Tennis Teams is based on recommendations at the end of last season and results of tryouts.

Kids who were in lessons last year and were recommended for team tryouts should register for an appropriate Junior Tennis Lesson (Intermediate or Advanced Intermediate).  If they make the team, they will attend the appropriate team practice session instead of the Junior Tennis lesson.   We will remove them from the lesson list and add them to a team roster if they make the team.

Age Guidelines for Tryouts:

  • Co-ed B-Team (12 and under by 12/31)
  • Boys’ A-Team Alternates (16 and under by 12/31)
  • Boys’ A-Team (16 and under by 10/1)

General Tryout Guidelines:

  • Players trying out should have been recommended for tryouts based on last year’s lessons.
  • All players trying out MUST be registered via the online sign-up.
  • Players returning to their previous season’s team should NOT go to tryout but must indicate they are returning to their team via the online registration to hold their roster spot
  • Any girls recommended for the team or returning to the team should sign up via SignUpGenius for Tryouts AND Girls Team (Girls team practice Mon/Wed 11:00-12:15).  Lineups for B and A matches will be determined at each practice
  • Any returning B-Team or A-Team Alternates players who register for A-Team tryout will automatically keep their B-Team or A-Team Alternates roster slot if they do not make A-Team.
  • If you have been recommended for teams or you are a current B or A-Team Alternates player wishing to try out for the A-Team, you are expected to attend both days.

Communication about tryout dates will be done via email, and dates will be posted on the website calendar. Please make sure you are on the Tennis Teams’ Email List.

Team placements are usually posted on the Club website a few days after tryouts.

*Dates of tryouts are tentative due to weather and BHS Boys Tennis schedule.

Team Descriptions

A-Teams

Wedgewood’s A-Teams compete in the Sudbury Valley Junior Tennis League.

Wedgewood has Division 1 Boys’ Team/s and a Division 1 Girls’ Team.

Boys’ A-Team practices

Boys’ A-Teams: Mon/Wed 1:15-2:30 pm

Matches (home and away) are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays typically at 1:00 pm.  The match schedule will be posted in mid-June.

In order to ensure availability for each match, the following rule is enforced:

Playing in a match requires being at the practice the day before the match.  If you are not at practice, you will NOT be able to play in the next day’s match.

Changes to the schedule and last-minute match changes are communicated through Team Snap.

Note: The Sudbury Valley League allows up to two 16-year-olds to play in a particular match, but they CANNOT turn 17 before 10/1 of the current calendar year. USTA ranked players are not allowed in this league if they have the following rankings: Players ranked better than 10 in the 10 and under division, better than 30 in the 12 and under division, better than 50 in the 14 and under division, and better than 60 in the 16 and under division.

Please review the Sudbury Valley Junior Tennis Code of Ethics

A-Team Alternates

The A-Team Alternates are players who are too old for the B-Team (see below) and who are looking for competitive match play opportunities as they prepare for future A-Team play.

A-Team Alternates Round Robins are primarily within Wedgewood and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:00 pm.

A-Team players who don’t play in the A-Team match that day should instead play in the A-Team Alternates team Round Robin.  Matches with other clubs will also be scheduled for the A-Team Alternates team when available.

Boys’ A-Team Alternates practice

Mon/Wed 12:15-1:15 pm (Subject to change depending on the number of participants)

Boys’ B-Team

The B-Team is primarily a development team with emphasis placed on fundamentals of match play and fitness for players 12 and under.

B-Team co-ed Round Robins are on select Fridays at Concord Country Club and are relaxed & fun. In addition, Coach Marjorie is always looking to add other round robin options.

Boys’ B-Team practice

Mon/Wed 12:15-1:15 pm

Most new B-Team members were recommended for the team at the end of last season. If you are new to the club, note that tennis students must be at or past the intermediate level, or have previous experience playing on a team, in order to try out for the B-Team (see criteria under Skill Level Description). Depending upon the number of candidates, some may not make the B-Team, and those students are encouraged to register for Intermediate or Advanced Intermediate lessons.

Girls’ A & B-Teams

Girls’ A and B Team Practice together on Mon/Wed 11-12:15 pm

A-Team Matches (home and away) are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays typically at 1:00 pm.  The match schedule will be posted in mid-June. In addition, most A-Team girls are eligible to play co-ed round robins with the B-Team.

In recent years, finding other clubs with availability to play matches has been a challenge. WW tennis staff try to schedule as many matches and co-ed round robins as possible. It’s helpful to know that other clubs run in more of a camp-like structure where attendance varies week-to-week, so they do not always have enough players to bring to a match.

Team Shirts

For matches, players should wear Wedgewood logo tennis shirts.  Wedgewood tennis shirts are sold during the first two tennis team practices. The cost of the shirts is $20.

Communication via TeamSnap

All communication for Tennis Teams is done via Team Snap. Players with phones and their parents are asked to download the Team Snap App HERE or Team Snap can be accessed by their website as well by going to www.teamsnap.com. Team Snap is used for match schedules & line ups, player availability, transportation, snack sign-ups, and team messaging. Due to the last-minute nature of weather cancelations in Tennis, we highly recommend downloading the app.

Once downloaded, please take a moment to familiarize yourselves with the TeamSnap app.

Go to “My Preferences” and make sure the following options are toggled ON

“Alerts and Schedule Updates”

“Team Chat Messages”

It is imperative that parents are available to drive the team to away matches.  Coaches are not allowed to drive the kids.  We ask that each parent volunteer for two dates as a driver for away matches AND fruit/snack provider for one home match.

Championships

The Sudbury Valley Junior Tennis League (SVJTL) requires A-Team championships to be played in late July/beginning of August.  The Girls or Boys A-Teams may participate in championships if we win our division.  Participation and schedule will be determined the weekend prior.

Please be aware if your child is on the A-Team Tennis team, they should be available for playoffs. The kids work really hard all season, and it’s unfortunate when they have to forfeit due to a lack of players.
