Youth Tennis Teams
Wedgewood has Division 1 Boys and Girls’ Tennis Teams (the A-Teams), which compete in the Sudbury Valley Junior Tennis League), and a Co-Ed development team (the B-Team).
- Participation in Youth Tennis Teams is based on recommendations at the end of last season and results of tryouts.
- Potential players must be at or past the Intermediate level in lessons or have previous experience playing on a team (see criteria under Skill Level Description).
- Depending upon the number of candidates, some players may not make the team they try out for
- Players who do not make the team they try out for will return to their team or lesson level from the previous year.
Team Descriptions
Boys A-Team
- Players must be 16 and under by 10/1.
- Practices are Mon/Wed 1:15-2:30 pm
- Matches (home and away) are Tue/Thu, typically at 1:00 pm and are posted in mid-June. Please refer to TeamSnap for the specific schedule and match times.
- Playing in a match requires being at the practice the day before the match. If you are not at practice, you will NOT be able to play in the next day’s match.
- A-Team players who don’t play in the day’s A-Team match should instead play in the A-Team Alternates team Round Robins (see below).
- Be aware that the Sudbury Valley Junior Tennis League championships are played in late July/early August. The Girls or Boys A-Teams may participate in championships if we win our division, and players should plan to be available..
Boys A-Team Alternates
- Players must be 16 and under by 12/31.
- A-Team Alternates are players who are too old for the B-Team (see below) and who are looking for competitive match play opportunities as they prepare for future A-Team play.
- Practices are Mon/Wed 12:15-1:15 pm (subject to change depending on the number of participants)
- Round Robins are Tue/Thu 4:00-5:00 pm and primarily held within Wedgewood.
- Matches with other clubs will also be scheduled for the A-Team Alternates team when available.
Girls A-Team
- Players must be 16 and under by 10/1.
- Practices are Mon/Wed 11:00 am – 12:15 pm
- Matches (home and away) are Tue/Thu, typically at 1:00 pm and are posted in mid-June. Please refer to TeamSnap for the specific schedule and match times.
- Matches and Co-Ed Round Robins with the B-Team are scheduled as much as possible. In recent years, finding other clubs with availability to play matches has been a challenge. Other clubs run in more of a camp-like structure where attendance varies week-to-week, so they do not always have enough players for a match.
Co-Ed B-Team
- Players must be 12 and under by 12/31.
- The Co-Ed B-Team is primarily a development team with emphasis placed on fundamentals of match play and fitness for players 12 and under.
- Practices are Mon/Wed 12:15-1:15 pm.
- Round-Robins are on select Fridays at Concord Country Club and are relaxed and fun. Coach Marjorie is always looking to add other round robin options.
Team Tryouts
- Players trying out should have been recommended for tryouts based on last year’s lessons.
- Communication about tryout dates will be done via email. Make sure to sign up for Club emails.
- Team placements are usually posted on the Club website a few days after tryouts.
Outfitting Your Player
- For matches, players should wear Wedgewood logo tennis shirts, which are sold during the first two tennis team practices.
- Shirts can be purchased for $20 each.
Transportation
- It is imperative that parents help drive the team to away matches. Coaches are not allowed to drive the kids.
- We ask that each parent volunteer for two dates as a driver for away matches AND one date as a snack provider for a home match.

Registration
- Registration information will be sent by email in advance of the signup date in mid-May. Make sure to sign up for Club emails.
- All players trying out MUST register via the online sign-up.
- IMPORTANT: When registering your child, please provide the player’s cell phone number (if they have one) as teams (especially A-Teams) communicate regularly by text.
- Players returning to their team from last year: Sign up as RETURNING to their team from last year and do NOT sign up for tryouts.
- Returning players trying out for Boys A-Team: Sign up as RETURNING to their team from last year AND sign up for tryouts. Players will automatically keep their spot on their team from last year if they don’t make A-Team.
- Players who were in lessons last year: Those trying out for Girls A-Team should sign up as RETURNING/NEW to Girls A-Team AND sign up for tryouts. Those trying out for Co-Ed B-Team should sign up for Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate lessons AND sign up for tryouts (they will be removed from lessons if they make the team).
Communication
- All communication, scheduling, match lineups, transportation signups, snack sign-ups, cancellation notifications, and team messaging is done via TeamSnap.
- You will receive a TeamSnap invitation via email before the season begins.
- Download the app and be sure to turn on “Alerts and Schedule Updates” and “Team Chat Messages”.
- Information is also shared via Club emails and The Wedgewood Weekly, so make sure to sign up.
